The Downtown Neighborhood Association

(I inadvertently put this in the comment box before)
One way to bring children downtown is to ensure there are quality schools in the attendance areas. Currently only part of the Downtown Neighborhood is in the nearby high school district and the other part must travel over 4 miles to high school. Our neighbor, Kent Howe, asks for DNA support in submitting a request to the school board to consider this matter in their current redistricting discussions. What is DNA's position on this?

Hello,

I have no objection to sending this letter.

Ditto. In fact, I'll go a step further and state that I, personally, strongly support the redistricting movement. Although the number of children actually living downtown may be small, it seems much more appropriate to send them a few short blocks, rather than several miles, to high school.
Ideally, this is something which should have been put to a GM vote, not least because a GM vote would carry more weight. But I assume that there isn't time for that. I also wish that there had been more discussion and info about this, because I prefer to make a well-informed decision rather than just agree to something that sounds good.

Of course, if an older, poorly thought out district merger is the only reason that that corner of downtown is districted for across the river, I can't imagine why anyone would object. But if that's the case, then why wouldn't the school board just do it?

My suspicions get aroused when parents start asking for redistricting, because it often gets used as a tool to increase unequal distribution of resources in the school system. I'm not saying that's the case here--I don't know any more about this than what Kent's told us--but I want to know whether this is a factor.
The letter referred to above and attached below was endorsed by the DNA Steering Committee and has been emailed to Barb Bellamy at the School Board.

How was this letter received by the school board? Has there been any action taken?
The letter was well received and I think they made the suggested change. There was an article in the R-G a couple weeks ago describing all the boundary changes.
