The Downtown Neighborhood Association

Here I am, sitting in my apartment on West Broadway between Lincoln and Lawrence, and I let my guard down for one minute, and this place becomes a polluted thoroughfare. This is West Broadway, downtown. Unfortunately, I have bad respiratory allergies and sensitivies. And, a nose like bloodhound, which actually, saves me from the possible asphixiation of passing smokers on the street, and the motor vehicles with broken tail pipes that sail through the alley running into the thruway of Broadway. If I did not possess this great sense of smell, I would be in danger of needing to be nebulized. I tell you, downtown is going down hill since I moved into this neighborhood only four years ago. I moved here, closer to downtown, two and a half years ago. Prior to moving to this address, I lived on West Broadway and Jefferson. Again, polluted and too near the freeway. Granted, the apartment I live in now is better, but the surroundings are decaying. There are gang tags on our parking stalls. It has become too stressful to live here, and I look forward to when I can get out of this neighborhood.

Jane,

I also have respiratory issues and a hair-trigger sense of smell, and I do notice that the air quality downtown is often not so great, mostly near the Library and along Willamette, probably in large part due to idling buses (something which is against LTD policy). But I live a block away from you, and the fact is that those streets you mention don't actually get that much traffic. It's certainly less of a health hazard than living near the freeway or near 6th or 7th. I doubt this will ever happen, but I think we should maybe consider at least getting rid of the four-way stop signs.
